DeKalb High School Choirs Shine at Lafayette!
In their last competition before the state finals, “DeKalb Show Choirs stood with the best” Saturday, said co-director Kent Johnson.
In a contest at Lafayette Jefferson High School, DeKalb’s Classic Connection placed third in the mixed division and first among Class B schools.
In the night finals, DeKalb placed third behind grand champion Carmel and runner-up Zionsville. Fourth place went to Sullivan, Illinois, and fifth place to Brownsburg. Judges chose Brandon Park as the best individual performer for DeKalb.
“DeKalb was the top Class B school there, even beating good-quality Class A groups like Chesterton, Brownsburg and Decatur, Illinois,” Johnson said.
In the division for girls’ choirs, DeKalb’s Sound Sensation placed fourth, the highest ranking for a Class B women’s group. Carmel won the championship, followed by Zionsville and Brownsburg. Judges chose Audria Carter as the best performer in DeKalb’s show.
“Both groups are singing very well, and Shelley is excited about state,” Johnson said about his wife, director Shelley Johnson.
The Indiana State School Music Association Class B state finals for show choirs will take place Saturday at Plainfield High School in Plainfield.
DeKalb choirs will present a preview show for family members and friends Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the DeKalb High School auditorium.
