From the Star--Fort Wayne--DeKalb High School's speech team placed fifth in the Carroll Carher Speech Invitational on Saturday.
Sixteen schools and 210 students competed. Chesterton High School won the meet followed in order by Canterbury, Northrop, South Side and DeKalb.
"I was really encouraged with a few strong individual performances from sophomores Logan Babcock and Abby Bainbridge," said DeKalb head coach Andy Comfort. "Clay Travis also continued his streak of placing in two different events. As a team, there were only a few points separating us from fourth and third places, so we hopefully realize we can compete with these larger schools."
Individuals placing for DeKalb were:
Logan Babcock, second in international extemporaneous; Clay Travis, Third in international extemp and eighth in impromptu; Tristan Friedel, third in discussion; Abby Bainbridge, third in original performance; Hope Kelham, fifth in broadcasting; Megan Smaltz, sixth in original oratory; Jasper Bassett, sixth in international extemp; and Shelby Mumford, eighth in United States extemp.
DeKalb will compete again Saturday in a meet at Lakeland High School.
