From The Star--Waterloo--The DeKalb Winter Drumline earned a championship Saturday at the Franklin Central indoor percussion show, the drumlin's first competition of the year.
"This was a big show with nearly all of the competition in their class in attendance," said DeKalb band director Terry Fisher.  "In an activity where placings are usually separated by tenths of a point, their score of 71.85 was more than 2 1/2  points ahead of the second-place group."
In a separate competition Saturday, the DeKalb Winter Guard was among only seven groups that earned gold ratings at the Heritage Invitational, which featured more than 20 groups.  DeKalb will compete this Saturday at Goshen High School.
