from the Star--LAGRANGE--The DeKalb High School speech team competed at the Lakeland Lakers Speech Invitational on Saturday, placed fourth to win a team trophy.
Eleven teams with 200 students competed at Lakeland. Concord won, follwed by Carroll, NOrthrop and DeKalb.
"Our kids competed well at Lakeland. I was surprised to come away with a team trophy based on the overall competition and the quality of schools present," said Andy Comfort, head speech coach for DeKalb. "We are able to do well enough in certain key categories and let the other high schools battle each other over the remaining events. The strategy worked, and hopefully we can carry this momentum into Sectionals this Saturday."
DeKalb will compete in the Indiana High School Forensics Association Sectional on Saturday at Northrop High School in Fort Wayne.
These students earned awards for DeKalb at Lakeland: Hope Kelham, third in broadcasting: Tristan Friedel, third in discussion: Abby Bainbridge, third in original performance: Clay Travis, third in impromptu and sixth in international extemporaneous: Megan Smaltz, fifth in impromptu and sixth in original oratory; and Cameron Stokes, eighth in United States extemp.
